Future Directions
An International Perspective
International Research priorities are influenced by social, political, and economic factors. Typically, international organizations such as the United Nations and the WHO prioritize health research that will affect the most marginalized of the world's population. As such, the eight goals identified by the United Nations (2000) focus on poverty, vulnerable populations (i.e., women and children), and the specific health issues. The goals are as follows:
- In 2020
- Less emphasis on nurses and nursing process.
- More on health, needs of clients and communities, evidence based practice.
- Beginning to focus on
- Quantitative and qualitative research programs
- Clinically based outcome studies
- Nursing research fund – financial support for research opportunities identified by nurse researcher community.
- Promoting Depth in Nursing Research
- Depth: similar studies building on a prior investigation. Replicated research.
- Generalizability
- Important if the science is to be considered reliable and usable in health care settings and in health care policies.
- Depth leads to credibility
- Goal
- Nursing research at a younger age. Leads to longevity research career
- Mentor and prepare next generation of researchers
- Nurse researchers
- Commitment to growth: periodic education and retraining when needed
- For example: shift in research emphasis, broaden scientific background, acquire new skills

As such, the eight goals identified by the United Nations (2000) focus on poverty, vulnerable populations (i.e., women and children), and the specific health issues. The goals are as follows:
- Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
- Achieve universal primary education
- Promote gender equality and empower women
- Reduce child mortality
- Improve maternal health
- Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
- Ensure environmental sustainability
- Develop a global partnership for development
- International research is likely to increase in the coming decades
- Testing nursing science from various perspectives (in different cultures)
- International collaborative research
- Comparative research – a phenomenon is studied in more than one country has increased
- International organizations help create research partnerships
- I.e. WHO – advance health care for global community
