Historical Milestones in the Development of Canadian Nursing Research
1863 &1958 Florence Nightingale published Notes on Matters Affecting Health, Efficiency and Hospital Administration of the British Army and Notes on Hospitals 1918 The University of British Columbia launched the first baccalaureate nursing program in Canada 1952 The American Nurses Association first published the journal Nursing Research 1959 The first Canadian nursing master's program was launched at the University of Western Ontario 1964-1965 The first nursing research project was funded by a Canadian federal granting agency; the International Journal of Nursing Studies and International Nursing Index were launched 1969-1970 Nursing papers, forerunner of the Canadian Journal of Nursing Research, was published at the McGill University 1971 McGill University launched the Centre for Nursing Research; the first national Canadian conference was held on nursing research; both were financed by the Department of National Health and Welfare 1978 The heads of university nursing schools and deans of graduate studies attended Kellogg National Seminar in Doctoral Education in Nursing 1982 The Alberta Foundation for Nursing Research, the first funding agency for nursing research, was established; the Working Group on Nursing Research was established by the Medical Research Council (MRC). 1985 Report of the Working Group on Nursing Research was released by the MRC (Medical Research Council of Canada, 1985) 1988 The MRC and the National Health Research and Development Program established a joint initiative to structure nursing research grants 1991 The first Canadian nursing PhD program was launched at University of Alberta, followed by the university of British Columbia 1992-1994 PhD programs in nursing were launched at McGill University, University of Toronto, and McMaster University 1999 The Nursing Research Fund was launched with a $25-million grant over 10 years; the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation administered the funds. PhD program in nursing was launched at the University of Calgary 2004 A forum on doctoral education was held in Toronto under the auspices of Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing to develop a national position paper on the PhD in nursing for Canada 2003-2010 PhD programs in nursing were initiated at Dalhousie University, Queen's University, Université Laval, Université de Montréal, Université de Sherbrooke, University of Victoria, University of Western Ontario, University of Saskatchewan, and University of Ontario |
